Salary: $18-$20.4/hour plus free room and board on campus if desired. Retirement benefits for staff returning for a second season. Health and retirement benefits are available for year-round staff member.

About Great Camp Sagamore

Located on secluded Sagamore Lake in one of the most remote areas of the Adirondack Park, Great Camp Sagamore is a National Historic Landmark and is one of the pioneering historic preservation efforts in the United States. Great Camp Sagamore is an educational non-profit institution, and we use the power and beauty of our location and the variety of our programming to teach the public about Adirondack history, the environment that surrounds the camp, and to instill in visitors a personal responsibility for community and nature.

During our season, which runs from Memorial Day through late October, guests visit from all over the world to take historical and environmental tours, to participate in day and overnight programs, to get married, host family reunions, and enjoy concerts. Guests range from first-time visitors to individuals and families who have been coming for decades.

Working at Great Camp Sagamore

This position requires working from Great Camp Sagamore in Raquette Lake, New York through our operational season of May - October year in housing provided by Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks, Inc. Raquette Lake is a small village in the heart of the Adirondack Park of New York State. The Assistant Caretaker must be comfortable living in a wilderness environment and be able to perform the tasks associated with the preservation of a historic complex and public programs.

Position Description

The Assistant Caretaker is expected to have a general background in maintenance as well as basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, equipment and landscaping skills. A strong work ethic and the ability to have fun and work with others is important as well.

This job is physically demanding. It requires the ability to walk throughout our camp complex.

Assist Head Caretaker in assigned duties, including:

  • Fix leaking plumbing, clogged toilets and sinks, and to take appropriate measures in plumbing emergencies.

  • Adjust heating and lighting in guest rooms.

  • Perform basic carpentry repairs and fabrication tasks.

  • Safely operate the generator for emergency power supply needs during outages.

  • Move furniture and equipment as necessitated by various programs in camp.

  • Drive Sagamore vehicles for various activities.

  • Pick up food deliveries for kitchen.

  • Mow lawns and basic grounds maintenance.

  • Stack and re-supply firewood at fire places and camp fire.

  • Help with road work (cleaning culverts, raking, rock picking, etc.)

  • Provide relief coverage for the Superintendent following his written instructions

  • Attend staff meetings

  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, and electrical skills.

  • Ability to operate power tools, including those for groundskeeping and interior maintenance tasks

  • Experience working for a non-profit organization.

  • Friendly, positive work attitude.
